This page is written for professionals providing sexual health services to members of the public. If you are a patient looking for specific sexual health or contraceptive information, we recommend visiting NHS Choices for more information.

Services

Printed copies of our service leaflet are available from the Sexual Health Clinic. We offer two different STI and HIV testing services

  • Routine testing: this service is for patients with no symptoms. Patients are seen by a sexual health nurse, health adviser or support worker and are tested for asymptomatic STI infections including HIV. Patients using our Routine Test service do not see a doctor and are not offered examination. We offer this service at all our clinics.
  • Doctor clinic: this service is for patients with symptoms or complex needs, with onsite diagnostic, examination, treatment and counselling support available. This is available during every session at West Middlesex Hospital by walk in or appointment and by appointment at the Heart of Hounslow.

Patients being referred for screening prior to IVF/sub-fertility treatment can use any service. If you require investigations for any blood-borne viruses other than HIV please send the patient with a referral letter.

Patients being referred for any other reason - please direct them to West Middlesex Hospital or encourage them to make an appointment at Heart of Hounslow.

  • Contraceptive services: we provide routine and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) for contraceptive purposes only. We cannot carry out investigations or provide treatment to women for non-contraceptive reasons; patients should be referred to community gynaecological services.

Training

The Sexual Health Department provides a wide range of teaching for clinical and non-clinical professionals in both contraception and sexual health. Training provided by the department is highly rated and continually receives positive feedback from trainees attending.

The department provides specific courses, on a rolling basis, aimed to develop the skills of those providing sexual health services to members of the public. The department also has protected clinical training for professional development and audit every month. Clinicians from other departments are invited to attend this training, meet the team and broaden their clinical knowledge. Information for General Practitioners and Medical Staff

Our services are provided to all patients without any need for referral. We request that patients requiring investigation for symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection are sent to our clinic at West Middlesex Hospital as we are unable to provide all required services at our community clinics.

If referring patients for long acting reversible contraception please advise the patient to telephone the service or to attend our walk in services at Hounslow or Feltham. Please note, we do not provide a walk in Implanon removal or complex IUD/IUS removal service. For complex removals please advise the patient to make an appointment and send with a covering letter or secure fax in advance to 020 8630 3303. We do not carry out gynaecological investigations.

To refer new HIV diagnoses please telephone the Health Adviser lead for HIV on 020 8321 2566 or send a secure fax to 020 8321 2568. We follow up all new HIV positive referrals within 24 hours.

Our services operate according to the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), the British HIV Association (BHIVA) and the Faculty of Family Planning guidelines. GPs and clinicians providing simple management of sexually transmitted infections, urethritis, vaginal discharge and genital ulceration and infection are advised to follow BASHH guidelines

For support and advice on completing partner notification/contract tracing, including provider referral for patients diagnosed with an STI please contact the Health Advisers within the Sexual Health Department on 020 8321 2566 or 6831.

The department publishes a regular sexual health e-newsletter giving all the latest news on sexual health services in Hounslow. To be placed on the distribution list, please email us here.
